Engine mounts have a twofold function – to hold the engine in place, and to reduce the vibrations felt in the car when the engine is operating. When they fail, engine mount replacement becomes a necessity.
Engine mounts do not require maintenance, but over time they may break – in that case we recommend replacing all engine mounts even if only one broke – why? Because the other engine mounts were subjected to even greater stress when the broken mount was not doing its job. As a result, they are more likely to fail. There is really no way to predict how long the engine mounts will last. Some may last the lifetime of the car, others can break after a few years. We recently had a case of a Toyota Camry, 6 years old, and just over 40,000 miles, yet one engine mount broke.
Signs that Engine Mounts Might Be Failing:
Increased engine noise – you know your vehicle, if its engine suddenly becomes more noisy, it’s time for a professional inspection
Increased vibration – any time there is increased vibration it’s a warning sign – time to call your friendly local mechanic to inspect your vehicle
