Most of us do not think about it, but the most important function of the clutch is to disengage the transmission from the motor. When the engine is turned on, it is constantly spinning. The transmission transfers this motion to the drive shaft, which then transfers the motion to the wheels. But there are times when you don’t want this motion transmission to occur – when the car is standing still with the engine on, for example when waiting for a change of light at an intersection, or when you are shifting gears – that’s when we use the clutch to disengage the transmission from the engine.

While the engine is on, it is designed to be constantly spinning. If the engine is not spinning, it would stop running and shut down. The motion is transferred to the drive shaft by the transmission and, in turn, to the wheels. However, you certainly don't want your transmission or your wheels to be spinning all the time. The main purpose of the clutch is to disengage the transmission from the motor in order for you to shift gears without grinding.
