Benefits of a Regular Oil Change

The primary benefit of an oil change is the replacement of old oil and oil filter. Removal of the old engine oil also removes a variety of debris that engine oil collects as it circulates through the system. New engine oil also lubricates better, because it has correct mechanical and chemical properties – these deteriorate with age and high temperatures.  A new oil filter does a better job of filtering out impurities and debris, and allows for better oil flow through the system.

When your vehicle is at the shop undergoing an oil change, we also get an opportunity to perform a complimentary digital vehicle inspection. We check air filters (a well-aspirated engine runs smooth, and requires less fuel), we check engine belts and hoses, we inspect fluids (coolant  fluid, master cylinder brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and washer fluid as well)  inspect and lube the chassis as needed, we inspect the underside of your vehicle for damage and oil leaks, naturally we also inspect the tires, and we will add air to bring them up to manufacturer specified pressure, and may recommend tire rotation as well.  We also do a battery check. We provide you with an electronic copy of the inspection results. 

How Often Should the Motor Oil Be Changed?

In the past, most manufacturers recommended that engine oil be changed every six months or every 3000 miles. If your vehicle uses full synthetic motor oil, we recommend oil change every 5000 miles, or every six months. You driving route and driving habits also can make a difference – driving up steep hills, or in stop-and-go traffic, result in more rapid engine oil deterioration. The age of your vehicle plays a part as well. If you are not sure if your vehicle is due for an oil change, you can stop at our San Leandro auto repair garage and we can do a quick visual inspection of the engine oil on the dipstick to determine if it needs to be replaced.
