The auto air conditioning evaporator is located behind the dashboard. Its job is to cool and dehumidify the air that is used to cool the cabin. Refrigerant enters at the bottom of the evaporator, in a high-pressure liquid state. As it flows through the evaporator coils, it absorbs heat from the air that flows over the coils (and in the process turns into gas that will be cooled and turned into liquid in the condenser then sent back into the evaporator). A fan located behind the evaporator blows the cold air into the passenger compartment.
